Red Hand Assemblage

Red Hand Assemblage Showing Hand
Red Hand Assemblage

This artwork is three in one.

The box/dual frame: I labored hard for over a week on the box, which is a very sturdy hand-built, hand-stained, hand-varnished, hand-waxed chunk of quality hardwood (heartwood select pine base and birch sides). It not only serves as a box (if you would want to use it as such a thing), but as a self-contained double frame which requires no wall hanging. It is perfect for a coffee table, end table, mantle, dining table or most any flat surface you would like to display it on… and it is so sturdy in construction that you won’t be freaking out if people get near it.

The box has two decorative hinges with a decorative patina on the spine edge if it; The latching mechanism is self-made from another smaller version of these hinges, combined with three solid brass model cannons from a model ship. The latch holds the piece securely shut, but opens easily when you want it to with a slight squeeze of the box and an easy flip of the thumb.

I spent hours and hours and hours buffing and buffing this piece. You may not see the glossiness of it in the picture, but it is pretty shiny.

Sometimes antiquing involves making something look beaten and ratty, sometimes it is a matter of making something look like something of quality kept new by an archivist or generations of enthusiastic caretakers – quality and new as the day it was made. For this particular look, I went with making it look like somewhat well-maintained antique… something once very expensive, polished periodically by its owners – well protected, but also well-used.

This sort of antiquing makes it much more involved than the other two. When I do this sort of antiquing on fresh and new untreated wood, making it look fashionably old is essentially a process of finishing and refinishing it to duplicate what time would do: Creating many stages of maintenance and multiple areas of color to create the look of something old… dark areas near crevices and hard to reach spaces, lighter areas where regular wear might occur.

The Art: To make these illustrations mesh well with the box, I made them in this dark-carnival, old Victorian occult ephemera style, with a lot of metaphysical flavor and a touch of campy horror propmaking. It not only made them work well with the box I envisioned, but made them fun for me and strikingly bold… a primitive and stark contrast to my normal reserved and detailed works and my muted color palettes.

Painting One: “Red Right Hand” this is one of two pieces done for a collaborative collection of China Miéville inspired illustrations and artworks, an effort assembled and coordinated by John Straun of SuperPunch. The Handlingers are mind-controlling creatures which look much like a human hand with a snake’s body. I decided on red for my colors because I wanted the hand to be red, and I might it a right hand just so I could name the piece “Red Right Hand”, because I am a huge Nick Cave fan.

Weaving Spiders Come Not Here

Painting Two: “Weaving Spiders Come Not Here”: I often name images for all of the phrases that swim around in my head. I don’t know what it is about soliloquy, sayings, proverbs, historical quotes and other such things that causes them to remain so well-embedded. I start working on a piece, and once he concept is in place, I immediately think of some string of words that fits, though usually a twist thereof. Rarely does the phrase inspire the piece, but the piece typically inspires the title, and the title sometimes shapes the work… this title coming from Shakespeare, or the once-curious reliefs seen outside of Bohemian Clubs. “The Weaver” is a large sentient spider with hands on its forelimbs (I also put them on its Pedipalps), with a love for scissors. The Spider with scissors brought this phrase to mind, so rather than repeating the more circular designs from the previous painting, I made them weave like webs, being cut by the spider.

20 Free IPhone (or other smart phone) desktop wallpapers

I sat up tonight making this first wave of free skins for the iphone.. why? I don’t know… I don’t even have one. They do however seem to be popular, and hopefully even people without that specific phone can use these.

These images are free to use for your own personal non-commercial use on your own phone.

There is no rule that says you specifically *have* to use them on an iphone though, if you are able to use them for any other cell phone or smart phone, please feel free. You also have my permission to change them to bitmap, gif, png, or whatever format your phone takes.

Some Day I Will Never Grow Up

SomeDay I Will Never Grow Up
SomeDay I Will Never Grow Up - Acrylic on Wood Panel Painting by Myke Amend (click for larger view)

The original was painted on a wood panel cabinet I hand-made for the purpose of doing this painting. I’ll be finishing up the cabinet when I return home.. I can’t tell you what I’ll be filling the cabinet with – but when the construct is done, I will have had a lot of fun making things to fill it with.

Though the cabinet is not done, the painting part of it is, and it was lovingly, carefully scanned for truest color and detail, and printed as a giclee for the best, most highly-detailed and most brilliant reproduction quality.

These are printed 12×18 (the original size of the work) on Canvas (for the optimal standard framing size), in archival pigment inks on 200+ year archival quality heavyweight cotton canvas. Each is coated with a UV, moisture, and scratch-resistant coating for added longevity.

25 total will be printed. All giclees on Canvas are shipped stretched and mounted withing the US, or rolled everywhere else (but you can arrange to receive a stretche copy if you wish to work out additional shipping).

Each is hand-signed, hand-numbered, and dated by Myke Amend. Each also comes with a certificate of authenticity. Both the artwork and the certificate have matching serialized holograms affixed to them (front of certificate, back of canvas) for added assurance and to protect the value of your print.

The Giclees on Canvas are available here: 12×18 Giclee on Canvas

***Also Available***

1) a 16×20 OPEN edition SIGNED giclee on fine art rag paper. No guarantee how long they’ll be available, but they are not as limited as the giclees on canvas.

2) a 9×12 metallic print of this same image, also open edition.

Smog is Awesome

Images from the World of Smog, via SuperPunch, wherein many more of the new figures from this utterly amazing and imaginative collection are featured HERE.

I’ve seen items from this collection many times in many art forums, and every time, I see something new and am beyond impressed.  I only hope they are not too hard to find once I am able to start collecting them.

Back from the Big Crash of 2010

You’ll notice there are still broken images for the older articles, something I’ll remedy gradually, but other than that everything is pretty much back to somewhat normal.

The store has its images again, as does the gallery, and the name and mission generators are working again (though the font is slightly off).

The free E-cards section is down for a little while longer, as it was the result of a *lot* of custom programming tying three separate plugins together. I also lost a few of the free desktop wallpapers and a whole page of the free Iphone desktop wallpapers for the time being (you can still find those at my flickr account though).

What Happened: The entire server went down May 14th, and all files and file structure were irretrievable. The backups got toasted when a second failure happened mid-backup, or so I am told.

The web host has been very helpful in getting things back on track, but my own last backups were old, and their were fried.

After 10 years with the same host, I took for granted that the host had that all covered… a bad move. Thankfully they managed to keep the MySQL data intact, so re-installing the site and its plugins without losing old entries and data was possible, though tricky.

Mankind Has No Time (Desktop Wallpaper)

Mankind Has No Time 1280x960 Desktop Wallpaper
Mankind Has No Time 1280x960 Desktop Wallpaper

This image was the cover for the upcoming September/October issue of Gatehouse Gazette, an excellent dieselpunk, pulp, horror, sci fi, steampunk mag if you aren’t already reading it. It was originally done for the magazine in pen and ink, as per their black and white specifications, but I decided to complete the piece with color after the publication date.

This is the finished result… very vintage pulp in its look and feel.

What I was going for was a very retro sort of Neon Genesis Evangelion sort of concept…of course what it translated to, especially with the 1940’s technology looks very “War of the Worlds”, both of which made it an enjoyable and fun piece to do.

Of Books and Other Things

I’m getting closer to being done with this series, and finished with the book… well, the art book anyway.

The shirts and bandanas will likely be available months before the book – They will be decorated by the cover image, but not the cover text, and are pretty amazing. I’ll be screen printing all of these on my own this time around – hopefully that will make them extra special, at least to to some people.

Airships and Tentacles
Airships and Tentacles

I was going to wrap the book up with some pencil and pen and ink work, some watercolors and gouache, but I’ve received a book cover commission from an artist I could not stand to have turned down, and that author wanted something similar to what I’ve been doing. I’ve also been asked to do some similar-themed interior illustrations for another author as well. So, this book will be delayed by a hair, but will also be several pages thicker when released.

Anyway, this post has knocked down the post for the November Sale, so I am just going to remind you here that through November 1st through November 31st of every year, my prices are their very, very lowest (because I don’t want to be buried in shipments the week before the Gift-Giving Season). You might want to take a look around my store (if not the entire store, look at the November Sale Section).

Here are some items which are coming soon, though maybe not in time for Christmas. The shirt is now available – though the tonal striped tees I wanted originally are no longer being made by the manufacturer… bummer:

Your Assumed Name for this Mission will be…

Example Image
Example NameGen. Since the Crash, I guess I chose the wrong font - but the skipped -f- sort of gives it a bit of charm (I'll still fix it eventually)

The new Adventurer Name Generator (not to be confused with the Secret Mission Adventure Generator) is finished. Give it a spin – a new name every day for you, or someone you love, or someone you don’t love very much at all.

Like the mission generator, every day you return, the names you enter today will yield different results. Results are particular to the day of the year, as well as the name, and if you keyed in every name in existence in a day’s time – you would still not see all the results available.

Give it a try here: http://www.mykeamend.com/namegen

New Facebook “Fan” Page

For those who have been following me all these years, you’re probably well aware that I don’t go crazy much with the friendings or the social networking thingers.

Sure, I make myself available on all these thingamabobs – myspace, facebook, twitter and the like, and make their whereabouts well-known – and I am happy to do a return add on (and actually interact with) most anyone who is not (obviously) a social media douchebag.

I do not, however, do not spend any of my time looking for people to add – or mass adding people in hopes that they might like my work.

Actually, the chances of me adding you out of the blue, not knowing you, not having met you at an event, are incredibly nil.

I see such self-marketing as the highest form of socialmediadouchebaggery, and have I’ve grown a serious distaste over the years for such things. Even though I know it is good for an artist to market oneself and all, umm… No… not for me.

I suppose this is a direct result of getting add requests three times a day from artists with 39,560 “fans”, whose master works include a paint-by numbers looking kitten on a toilet eating a taco, and a cookie tray with 5 colors of paint poured on it, glued to a can of deviled ham and a fake mustache for no good reason.

If however you decide to become a “fan” (*shudders at that word*), you will be privy to special offers, special sales on one of a kind items, and the occasional “Crap! I need to pay my crime-scene cleanup service bill! – what can I deep discount???!!” posting.

So, if you’re interested in keeping up on my artwork, want to be on the lookout for sales and special offers, or simply wish to maintain your internet love affair with pictures of my unshaven feet, you can find my new Facebook page here: www.facebook.com/mykeamend

We’re waiting for you!!!!!

… Well, okay… we ate all the cake – and the game of “Truth or Dare” has already devolved completely into “naked time” with commando block sprinting… but someone did mention you by name, I think.

November Sale

Winter is on its way, and in order to make our Holidays better, yours and mine, I am holding a big November Sale.

Giclees are the main thing on sale this month – some of which there are less than 15 of remaining, ever, out of 50 that will be out there in the world, ever.

Beth and I would like to get into our apartment before winter hits, which will require a new electrical box, having the stove connected, and a lot of work and investment all the way around. Help us towards this goal, and help yourself to prints at the lowest prices we can ever offer.

Now is your best chance this year, perhaps ever, to get these prints for yourself, friends, or family. Not only are the prices incredibly low, but reserves being what they are, some of these may be gone completely by the month’s end.

I’ve organized a section in the store for this sale, click here, or look for “November Sale” in the store categories (lower right side of this page).
