My Ever-Changing Store

You might notice some changes here over the next few days; You may even notice some of these happening as you navigate, depending on where you are.

I am working from the advice of colleagues, and from visitors, as well as my own observations – making little changes here or there for ease of use – from button colors, to re-organizing the store, to putting up better images of some of the older items that are available, and changing the ordering of those images.

I am even re-designing a lot of the older prints, and of course their thumbnails, as the graphics I put up for them were from when I had a super-insanely bright monitor, and the print designs themselves were too much like posters and not befitting the quality stock, inks, and finishes involved in making them. More on this in the next posting.

I have been meaning to change a lot of these things for a long time – and now that I have all this traffic, well I feel like I was caught with my pants down… except that that wouldn’t be embarrassing. This, however, is.

I am also going to start using this site more often, brush the dust off of it, and try to use it as my primary blog. Hopefully what you will see here over the next few months, will be more than announcements of sale items (but you will probably see those too).

I will probably also make some announcements here or there relating to the Miskatonic Archive: A Strange Fiction and Horror related site that Beth, Myself, and a few others do for fun.

I also plan to, once my comic book is off the presses, begin doing doodles and web-comic strips here as well. I am not yet sure if I am going to mirror those over at Some Ghouls Wander by Mistake, as I might opt to keep that site print content only to make it less confusing.

Now that I am done making this announcement about less announcements – I am off to make one more announcement.

Thank you for reading.

“The Rescue” Discount Ends Monday the 18th

The Rescue - Painted by Myke Amend for Robert Brown of Abney Park in June 2006

The ($255) special-priced editions at Etsy (ettadiem.etsy.com) have run out… within minutes of posting about it actually. The price will remain at $265 here, on Etsy, and the Miskatonic Archive through Monday, August the 18th before bumping it up to something more sane, simply for the sake of giving fair warning.

The 24x36s ($89 – only 10 left) will also be ending on Monday August the 18th. This shop has run out of them, but there are 6 left at The Miskatonic Archive. They are absolutely beautiful in metallic sheen BTW, and I really wish I had not limited these to twenty (especially since I want one for myself).

The cost in time and money involved in just packaging and handling the giclees is high, and all of these are selling so quickly that I am working very long days just to catch up on shipping and at the same time keep up with my clients’ needs.

In retrospect, I see limiting them to 50 or 20 just caused a bit of a frenzy, and put a serious amount of work on my table. There really is no way to unlimit an edition, or to move the quantities up – but for future artworks, I will limit my editions to 295, or 195, or 95 – and not 50 or 20.

The open editions, are made primarily for this reason, so that people can have nice sized versions of this artwork cheaply and without the time/money expense of certificates and such. Though still a nice size, they are smaller than the limiteds and uncertified, so as not to devalue the limited editions. They still dress up a wall, entry table, book case, cabin, or galley quite nicely.

But… They are not necessarily guaranteed to remain in print, as Abney Park has been so incredibly good to me and good for me that I do not want to make too much of my living off their icon – “The HMS Ophelia”.  I may eventually opt to bring AP Logoed posters instead, for easier storage, travel, shipping, and packaging – and so that while on the road, I can better promote Abney Park (who in case you haven’t guessed – are one of my favorite bands).

I will have other new artworks up soon, and will be working on promoting those. One in particular for another favorite band, yet to be disclosed.

Web preview of the comic is next on the plate.

Wakey Wakey

It is almost 4AM – and it has been one whirlwind of a month.

Beth is out on family business, and after handling her side of the shipping for less than a week, I have decided that I should really give her a serious raise. The way she packages things, and the speed at which she does it, is nothing short of amazing.

I however, am in a room piled with prints in chairs and even more across the bed I am not using. There is cardboard everywhere, and probably a bit of blood and assorted body parts from that taping accident. I am afraid that when I do go to sleep or sit down, it is then that I will probably find the scissors and my exacto knife.

I think I may have accidentally shipped a cat, though I’ll never admit to it. I am sorry, she is yours now – and I do not know what you are talking about.

I have been working 18 hours a day without break for a while now. Offers are coming in from all over the place to do this or that, and I am shipping like crazy. I have been bouncing between correspondence, shipping, ordering, screaming at people on the phone, threatening to invade neighboring countries, waving shoes at people, and doing my regular ad design and web programming work… while dying for a chance to send the comic book off to the printers and finish my children’s book.

I am however taking time here or there for a happy dance. It is nice to sell things, not so much for the money – I don’t mark things up much, but because of the happiness of being salable.. saleable.. sale-able… all selly and stuff.

My colleagues are saying I am pricing my prints too cheaply, and they just may be right. It does not seem like I can keep any on hand this week… well, on hand and unordered anyway. This sale might end soon.

The ordered things are piling up… at least as far as the limited editions are concerned.

Currently, I am waiting on my certificates of authenticity to arrive – they should be here later today. I’d tell you the hell I went through for that, but that would be a book.

In the mean time, I am pre-packing everything, labeling everything, hand-embellishing a few giclees, and printing shipping lists and postage. Open edition prints are going out as they are ordered – limited editions will be catching up with the arrival of those certificates.

Today will be likely spent applying holograms, filling out certificates, registering those certificates, and making the post man really, really hate me.

Thank you for visiting. Thank you for your kind words. Thank you for your purchases. And most of all thank you for your patience. The great hologram certificate shortage of 2008 is finally over – back to … things.

A Thank You, and Special Offer

For those of you who visit regularly, or irregularly, or are subscribed to my rss feed, I’d like to apologize for being so scarce here, and explain what I’ve been up to.

There is a chance within this posting for you to score some free stuff, and you need not promote me, get votes, or any of that silly nonsense – more on this later.

In September, a book will be coming out – a collection of dark artists – myself, Bethalynne Bajema, Brom, and others are included. I can’t give any more details on that yet.

In October, a Movie called “Quench” will finally be released. You can view the trailer [here]. Note that in the trailer you can see at least five of my paintings in various scenes. They have a rather significant part in the movie I hear (Some of these paintings have not yet sold, and are available through my store).

In Late August/Early September, I will have my promotion in place and be ready to ship my new comic book, “Some Ghouls Wander by Mistake“, hopefully.

This comic book just may cause my extended family to change their last name, or perhaps change mine – but from what I have heard, it is quite funny – though anything but the sort of intelligent humor some would expect from me. It is a dark comedy, with lots of death, gore, bad language, spooky stuff, chickens, and everything else needed to merit being hidden behind the counter at your local comic store.

Long story short: Car trouble. I could use some sort of financing – and since I have no breasts to offer peeks at, I would really appreciate (in compensation) some more sales through here, Through Etta Diem’s Etsy shoppe, or through the Miskatonic Archive.

How much would I appreciate sales? Well, the first twenty purchasers spending $30 or more either here or at the archive, or at the Etta Diem Etsy store will be put on a list. All you have to do is mention in your payment details that you’ve read this blog, or say that you would like to be added.

People on that aforementioned list will receive a special hand-signed, hand embellished, hand-doodled upon printing of this comic book. Yes, I will hand -decorate the cover, doodle some things on the inside cover, and sign it to you.

This offer ends when I have reached twenty such sales, or when the book goes to typesetting, whichever comes first. In which case I will post here that this offer has ended. Anyone who has purchased before I make that post, will also reap the same rewards as the twenty anticipated takers.

Though I would prefer this offer be made only to people who actually visit my site – You are welcome to share details of this offer with others – because I cannot stop you from doing so.

*gasp* an update!

Anymore, it seems my life can be summed up by a ‘to do list’, which I suppose is much better than the past decades where I could have used a ‘not to do list’ to work by.

Once in a while, I think to myself that I must have been more interesting as an insane person, and possibly even more likeable for some bizarre reason… but that thought is whimsical, fleeting at best – not because I think it is without merit, simply because I would much rather be the self who is typing this rather mundane entry, than any alternative.

This is about as far as I am going to go in expanding upon that thought – because it likely sounds a lot like “blah blah blah me”… which I guess is a symptom of journaling in general…

anyway…

I’ll be in Chicago next week – June 26th through 30th – at the Wizard World Chicago convention.

I am not quite sure, but I am mostly confident that there will be people in robes, turning things and people into chickens, which means it should be pretty exciting. I will however be very wary of anyone wearing a robe.

Aside from this, Bethalynne Bajema and I will have a table, and we will be selling things and signing things as if we were celebrities or something. I will not be showing my new comic book to anyone but co-conspirators, but I will be returning home ready to print … meaning I should probably find a quick and cheap way to make some sort of promotional whatsits with a release date on it… though I would always rather be doing than promoting things done… hence my lack of content here…

The last days, the next days…

I spent the 5 hours a day for two days and the last 22 hours programming and tweaking some super cool thing so I could get paid… only to find that there was a mixup and I was not supposed to start on it yet. Not that the job wasn’t approved… I will see my monies eventually… but the payment I was anticipating is not the instant reward I was anticipating in those hours I feverishly worked to get it done. I am kicking myself for not concentrating on other pressing things *hint* *hint*  I could really use some people buying some stuff to make up for my miscalculations.

Also hopefully be going to Salem to see those other printers and get that Abney Park painting back so I can ship it off to them.

This also means I will be able to offer prints of that piece soon (below).

It is called “The Rescue” and incorporates Vernian overtones with a lovecraftian feel, slight peril to keep it interesting but not too busy, the HMS Ophelia (Abney Park’s Airship), a somewhat Nautilus-like submarine, and of course Tentacles – otherwise the elders would never grant their seal of approval. I hate to say it is “steampunk” because the intention of the piece is to illustrate a story, and to make art – timeless art. I’d hate for it to only be seen for that, as much as it does apply.

If you would like to buy a 32 x 22 inch giclee on canvas at a very limited time presale price, I am selling two for $165 a piece plus S&H.

They will be Shipped between July 3rd and July 7th.

One is for sale here, the other here

Where the Wild Roses Grow

It has always secretly bothered me when there is a print that never sells or an art post that sees little action, because I have this piece of art I absolutely love, and what I love or think is good, is simply not good enough.

Then down the line, sure enough I look at it again and see that it was not quite executed to its full potential, or presented properly, and I go back and rework it. Such was my labor for the day.

What happens with a lot of my digital work prints, since I can go back and edit them time and time again, is that people often end up with prints where there are only one or two like it in existence – which I suppose is a good thing. Just once I would like to do something and know that I am not going to dislike it or need to improve upon it a few weeks later… but such is the way art goes.

I completely reworked most everything, and have added this one to the miskatonic archive print store.

New sites, and new art

I have been working on getting my stuff together for coming conventions. I have however managed a new piece of art or two in this time, and have managed to design and redesign a few sites (Mykeamend.com being the very next).

Since my site will shortly be replaced with the new one, and since the Miskatonic Archive is a labor of love at this point in time, I am adding the new piece of artwork there first.

Why? because that store has all the options set up for you to order easily in all formats from tiny cards, to huge posters, standard prints, extra special metallic prints, puzzles, magnets and more… all sorted neatly by the particular piece of artwork… and much much easier than shopping right here.

The below new artwork, titled “Conception”, will be a Miskatonic Archive exclusive for the next month or so. I will only add it here when this site is redone. Click the image below to visit the Miskatonic Archive. You will find this new piece of artwork (along with a bigger view of it) in their store.

Tin Man

Yesterday, when I entered the lab. This image was flickering within the holo-tubes of our computing machine. Much like the others, it bears the seal of Myke Amend. We have not yet decoded its meaning, but that will not stop us from issuing reproductions… because, as you know, we need to replace the bathing wing of the gymnasium, due to what we would like to call “a very localized storm”.

This print is available in heavy-weight luster finish archival prints, or in metallic heavy-weight luster finish archival prints.. yep.. metallic.

Heptameron

I just finished this piece tonight, and am glad to finally be able to show it. It is sort of steampunk / neo-victorian, sort of gothic, a bit of fantasy, a bit of science fiction, and a bit of horror, all mixed up into one.

My main goal here was to make an image that one could look at every day for a long time and always find something new, as well as to both hone and exhibit my digital painting skill.

The piece is 20 inches by 16 at 300 DPI, and highly, highly detailed down to hundredths of an inch in some places. In order to see all the detail, you would really need to buy the print, but I will try to show you some of the detail in the images below.

The 252 piece puzzle is over 10 x 13 inches, and is now available in my store.

The fine-art print is available in my store as a giclee (paint printed onto stretched canvas), and standard print on high-quality high whitepoint heavyweight archival paper in archival inks with a luster finish.

Up for sale on Ebay

Original painting by Myke Amend – self portrait in the form of Neil Gaiman’s and DC/Vertigo Comics’ “Destiny” from the Sandman series.

-> EBAY LINK IS HERE <-

This work was inspired by my leaving the city I had lived most of my life in, the deaths and departures of the only other remaining members of our original crowd, and the closing of my club night: Necropolis. A post-Wake Destiny was the icon or character I identified most with during that period in time, and took root in my last Cincinnati painting.

The lanterns hang upside down becoming jelly-fish like creatures, their chains stretching into nowhere, and the columns are picking up root and walking following closely behind.

It ships with a handful of mini-prints of some of my other works and a handwritten and handsigned thank you note on the back of one of said prints (archival inks, heavy photographic stock, luster finish either 6×4 or 5×4 depending on the piece).

I have a buyer agreement for this item – mostly just says you cannot alter or destroy this painting, and need to let me know if you sell it or give it to someone else (so I can know where it is). This painting will be shipped when the painting is paid for *and* when the buyer agreement is faxed to me (or you can send it to me by mail).

If you would like to read said agreement – it is here: https://mykeamend.com/?page_id=19

Medium:

Artwork painted in oil on tempered hardboard.

Unframed, and not necessarily in need of framing, but would look its best in a small shadowbox.
